TVBuzz: Saturday Night Live

“Saturday Night Live”

And now, from New York, the most dangerous city in America, it’s Saturday Night Live.

It features a regular cast of typically up-and-coming comic actors, joined by a guest host and musical act.

The classic late night live sketch comedy show.

NBC purchased the rights to the name in 1976 and officially adopted the new title on March 26, 1977.

It was created by Canadian Lorne Michaels who, excluding seasons 6 through season 10, has produced and written for the show and remains its executive producer.

Saturday Night Live is a weekly late-night 90-minute American sketch comedy /variety show based in New York City that debuted on October 11, 1975.

The show — broadcast live from Studio 8H at the GE Building in New York’s Rockefeller Center — has launched careers for many major American comedy stars of the last thirty years.

In 1979, he guest-hosted on Saturday Night Live, where he proved to be a good sport in spoofing his TV sitcom image by appearing in a Twilight Zone send-up, where, always trying to go “home”, he’d find himself among the characters from other 1950s/early ’60s-era sitcoms, Leave It to Beaver, Father Knows Best and Make Room for Daddy.

George Carlin was first to host the show; Candice Bergen was the first female to host the show a few weeks later and again hosted only six weeks after that.

He appeared as musical guest two times in 1999.

Despite the show’s core theme of live comedy, on a few rare occasions stand-up segments weren’t truly “live”, but broadcast on a 7-second tape-delay: 13 December 1975 , 15 November 1986 , and 12 May 1990 , each time to allow censoring any “accidental” expletives.

Sketches and other segments are given labels which are put on index cards and put on the board in the order of their performance.

The order is based on content as well as production limitations such as camera placement and performer availability.

SNL is one of the longest-running network programs in American television history.
