They discover the Beach, and it is as beautiful as it is reputed to be.

Lamai beach is lovely a stunning crescent of palm-fringed powdery white sand that’s perfect for whiling away the day sunbathing and a deep central stretch of water great for swimming and watersports.

Richard , a young American backpacking in Thailand, has come to Southeast Asia with the intention of experiencing something radically different from the life he is used to.

In a cheap guest-house on Khaosan Road in Bangkok, Richard, a young traveller from London, meets a strange Scotsman going by the pseudonym of Daffy Duck who leaves him a hand-drawn map of a hidden beach that is inaccessible to tourists, and then commits suicide.

Rumours state that it leads to a solitary beach paradise, a tropical bliss excited and intrigued, he sets out to find it.

On this island there is supposed to be a secret community of travelers who have left behind their former lives.

While staying at a creaky Bangkok guest house, he finds a carefully drawn map left by his angry, doped-up neighbor, a suicide who called himself Mr. Daffy Duck.

Life is very idyllic on the island, for the pleasures of an infinite amount of marijuana available and attractive French women are enough to satisfy any man’s desires.

When the group finally reaches the beach after bribing a local boat contractor, taking a long swim and eventually jumping down a waterfall they are faced with a tight-knit and largely self-sufficient community which has almost completely shut itself off from civilization and which has developed a sophisticated hierarchy under the quasi-dictatorial rule of a young American woman called Sal and her South African lover Bugs, who, along with Daffy, discovered the beach and founded the community there in 1989.

Like in the rest of Samui, the beach vendors are polite and not too persistent and therefore offer a useful service, rather than an annoyance.

Richard then meets a French couple: the very beautiful Françoise and her handsome boyfriend, Étienne , and convinces them to accompany him to the island.

Twenty-something Richard travels to Thailand and finds himself in possession of a strange map.

Garland’s amphetamine-paced first novel plunks some young European expats down on a remote island in the Gulf of Thailand.

Richard initially dismisses the island’s existence, but later meets a man named Daffy Duck who tells Richard that he is a former inhabitant, and who gives him a map to the island.

Lamai also has a number of massage salas dotted along the beach.
